Every year Ohrid (web) hosts thousands of tourists from around the world. They come for the unique combination of history, culture and sunbathing that few places in the world can offer. Within a single day one can take a tour of historical monuments dating back to the Neolithic period, swim in one of the oldest and clearest lakes in Europe, and enjoy a world-class concert in St. Sofia, one of the hundreds of churches sprinkled around the lake. Because of its unique combination of natural beauty and cultural tradition, Ohrid is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ohrid was the home of the Glagolitic Literary School, founded in the 10th century and considered to be the first university in the Balkans. In the years since, Ohrid has hosted generations of artists and scholars, ranging from fresco painters and church builders to translators, writers and Slavists. In recent years Ohrid hotels host a number of conferences and seminars, which take place year-round due to the mild climate and the density of tourist attractions.
